Newport News: Lego Robotics Camp: Advanced programming for beginners

IMG_3292IMG_9318   Learn robotics!  FLL (First Lego League) is one of the very best programs I have done with my children. I’ve seen programs promise to deliver math, science and engineering, but we never had one tool deliver with such fun, effectiveness and enthusiasm,  all while offering open ended, solution-focused creativity to the mix as when we started using the Lego robotics NXT Mindstorm.

For the summer of 2015!  All new experiments and programs!
Using legos and programming to win on the field of STEM.  Students will learn how 5 different sensors works, how machines understand their world and what it takes to for machines to beat machines. With mazes, electronic rock- paper-scissors bots and robotic crocodiles, students will explore robotics in fun and challenging way.
#6193 FTC team, the Electrical Invaders, is holding a camp where the team will help teach the STEM skills they have honed over the last 5 years of robotics to other kids, 7-13, under the guidance of Brandy Bergenstock, their coach and experienced camp counselor for the past 12 years.
Who: For anyone interested in making a functioning robot
Where: 415 Youngs Mill ln, Newport News Va 23602 (in the UUFP building)

Key Learning Values:
  • Using input and output devices and producing a simple set of sequential instructions, as well as parallel programming!
  • Developing and testing a system to monitor and control events
  • Using intuitive prediction tools to get first hand experience with making hypothesis
  • Using the scientific inquiry process when gathering and analyzing data sets
  • Integrating Maths and Science using physical constants, units of measurement, coordinate systems, min, max, mean and linear formulas. Understand light and sound waves and consider how the robot computes them into data.
  • Using ultrasonic, touch, light and servo sensors to control and command the robot.
  • Did we mention we have sumo robot battles ?
All day campers will spend the first half the day working on lego engineering projects and free building, and the second half the day programming and directly engaging with the robots.
Our team has successfully run 5 summer camps inviting all children to simultaneously learn basic computer programming and robotics fundamentals.   We hope you will consider joining us this summer.
